HOW TO USE HERBS
AND HERB TEAS
TO RESTORE HEALTH AND WELLNESS
By Paavo Airola, Ph.D., N.D.

Comments: This information is provided by The Science of Wellness Society and is not presented by Dr. Paavo using the complete science for he did not know about it.

It is obvious that he did not have the full science of Wellness to assist him in his understanding.   If he had this science he would have presented this information in a different format and would have made different suggestions for using herbs.

He could have told you how to check to know when an herb is for you to use before you use it. He could have told you how to find out if and when it will not work or that it will hurt you.

The lack of this knowledge is a severe problem on earth, especially among care giving  practitioners, for they do not have a complete science to help them know who, when, where, why, how, how much and for how long a food (herb) or any other substance including drugs can be safely used!

You must understand that it is a scientific fact that there are no such substances as a totally safe with no  side effects, unless they are applied using the Science of Wellness, found only on this site.

True science declares that everything will eventually manifest good or bad side effects. It just depends upon the conditions at the time it is going to appear.

Even your Paracelsus (700 Ad)  declared this fact, even though he did not pursue research to validate it, but instead sought, through Alchemy, for one substance that would cure all disease!

Herbs have been described as healing substances as if they were medicines, but this is not so, they are and always have been just food.

So, it is that we know that foods cause disease and foods heal them and knowing how this works and when this happens is the key to a long, happy, disease and pain free healthy life!

Without the complete science, problems will always arise with some individuals and we know that you do not want to be that individual.

So, we are providing seminars where you can learn this important information to help you guide your choices in all you do!

Dr. Paavo begins:

"Herbs have been used as healing agents since the beginning of time by every race upon the earth.

Primitive people in every corner of this planet possessed remarkable knowledge of the medicinal value of certain roots, barks, seed and plants that grew in their environment.

This knowledge was handed down from one generation to the next.

Later, when the primitive medicine man was replaced by modern medical doctors, almost 90 percent of the medical pharmacopoeia that doctors used was made up of botanical medicines: herbs, roots, etc.

The oldest medical Literature, such as Papyrus Ebers (2nd century B.C.), Atherva Veda, and all the records of Persian, Roman, Hebrew, Chinese and Egyptian medicine, show that herbal medicine was in highest regard and used extensively to cure practically every ill known to man.

As late as in the 1800's, fully 80 percent of medicines available to doctors were plant derivatives.

Although with the advance of chemical science doctors of today have all but forgotten the healing treasures of nature, in many parts of the world herbs are still used as remedial agents.

In Mexico botanical medicine was highly advanced during Mayan, Incan and Aztec cultures and has survived unto present times.

It is not an exaggeration to say that more herbs than chemical drugs are used in Mexico today for healing aposes, judging by the amount of herbs sold in numerous herbal shops and stands on every market in every town, village and city.

In India, China, Central and South America, Africa and the Pacific Islands, herbs are still widely used---the art of botanical but cannot medicine having been carefully preserved by skillful herbalists.

Even modern 20th century medical science after being contemptuous of herbal medicine for decades, is now turning "back to nature" and is engaged in worldwide research of old-time herbal remedies.

Some of our largest pharmaceutical companies are testing thousands of herbs and plants in hopes of isolating the supposedly active medicinal ingredient and put it into tablet form.

Some of today's most commonly used tranquilizers are made from a plant called snakeroot (Rauwlfia).

A commonly used heart medicine, digitalis, is made from the leaves of the plant called foxglove. In Mexico, testosterone tablets (male sex hormone) are now manufactured by a leading drug company from sarsaparilla root.

Chemists from all major drug companies are studying old books on herbs in hopes to find effective and harmless medicines to replace some of the harmful and ineffective chemicals in modern drugstores.

Even the National Cancer Institute is now seriously investigating natural plant cures for cancer.

Several universities, notably the University of Arizona, California College of Medical angelists, Utah University, and others, backed by government and private grants, are engaged in search of medicinal plants that can cure a mushrooming list of disease that chemical drugs are powerless against: cancer, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, heart disease, etc.

Medical science is now confirming what the Bible has been telling from the beginning and what "primitive" people around the world knew all along, that man's best medicine is right close to him and all around him --- in the plant kingdom.

There is not a single disease in man that does not have a corresponding remedy or cure in some herb, root, bark or other botanical medicine.

As it is said, "for every disease there is a cure," and this cure was given to man by a wise and loving Creator right in his close environment --- in the plant kingdom.

It behooves us to learn about and use these God-given herbal remedies to cure our ills.

In Part One of the book the most effective herbal remedies are listed for almost every condition.

Most of the mentioned herbs are available in all better health food stores.

They are also sold by mail by numerous herb houses. Look in the yellow pages of your telephone directory for one nearest you.

They also usually advertise in health magazines.

Some of the herbs listed may grow in your own environment: dandelion, birch leaves, chamomile, common nettle, alfalfa, peppermint, comfrey, rose hips, raspberry leaves, chaparral, eucalyptus leaves, juniper berries, parsley - to name a few. These herbs can be picked and dried for future use.

They should be picked early in the summer, preferably when the plant is in full bloom.

Herbs should then be dried outside in the shade, in a well ventilated area. When thoroughly dry, keep them in tightly closed glass jars, or in heavy brown paper bags.

The same applies to barks and roots, although they require a much longer time for drying.

HOW TO PREPARE HERBS FOR USE

The most common way to use herbs, especially leaves, blossoms and small plants, is in the form of herb tea, or what is professionally called infusions.

Here's how you make herb tea: take 1 tsp. of dried herbs to a cup of water, or 1 ounce of the herb to 1 pint of water, if a larger quantity is desired.

Boil the water. Place herbs in a cup or container and pour the boiling water over the herb. Cover and let it steep for 15 minutes.

After that, stir, let settle, strain and let cool down to drinkable temperature - never drink the tea boiling hot!

There is no wisdom in curing acne and dying of stomach cancer, which drinking boiling hot liquids surely can cause!

Tea can be sweetened with a little natural honey, never sugar. NOTE: Infusions or herb teas should never be boiled!

Boil only the water first before pouring onto the herb, let the water cool for a few seconds, then pour on the herb.

Another way to use herbs is in the form of so-called:

Decoctions

Decoctions are made by boiling herbs in water for a considerable length of time.

Hard materials, such as roots, barks, seeds, etc., are normally prepared as decoctions, since it would require a longer time to extract the active ingredients from them.

Here's how to make decoctions : Place 1 ounce of roots, bark or seeds in 1 ½ pints of cold
water.

Cover and let boil for ½ hour. Let stand and steep for another ½ hour.

Then strain, cool and drink, or store in a glass jar in the refrigerator for future use.

Which teas should be made fresh every day, decoctions can be stored for about one week.

Some herbs are used in the form of:

Tinctures.

Tinctures are herb extractions made with help of pure or diluted spirits of alcohol, or brandy, or vodka.

The main reasons for making tinctures is that the medicinal property of some herbs is destroyed by the use of heat, and some herbs will not yield the active ingredient to water alone.

Tinctures are made in the following way: 1 once of powdered herb is mixed with 12 oz. of pure spirits (90 proof) diluted with 4 oz. of water.

Vodka or brandy do not require water and can be used straight.

Put it in a glass bottle or jar.

The mixture is allowed to stand for 10 to 14 days; the bottle should be shaken every day.

After that the contents are strained through a fine flannel, sediments discarded and the clear tincture is bottled for future use.

Poultices are another way to use herbs. There are two ways poultices are usually applied.

1. Fresh whole leaves - usually large leaves of such plants as comfrey, cabbage, raspberries or nettles - are placed directly on the affected part, such as the points, abdomen, etc., in layers of several leaves over each other, then covered with piece of cloth and finally wrapped with a large towel or blanket. Such a poultice "draws" the disease out of the affected part and soothes the pain.

2. Fresh leaves or plants are crushed and heated in a little water (sometimes in castor oil), then spread as hot as can be tolerated directly on the affected parts and covered with cloth.

A plastic sheet is placed over, then a towel, and above all an electric heating pad.

The poultice should be left on for ½ to 1 hour.

The medicinal property of the herb in combination with heat has a powerful healing effect, especially in rheumatic and arthritic conditions. Dried herbs can be used also, if fresh are not available, for such a poultice."

"How to Get Well" list specific medicinal herbs for practically every known disease or ailment."

COMMENTS By The Science of Wellness Society:

Dr. Paavo Airola Ph.D.,N,D., as a Naturopath states his understanding of the use and preparation of herbs.

There are many ways to prepare them, but as it is easily seen, their use is in general the same methods or procedures of the Allopath so that the use of the Herb or Natural substance has a similar outcome of a drug.

Or it, by accident, acts as a nutrient and feeds the body what it needs to function in harmony.

But with all of this information found in books, there are no controls or much of an ability to predict the outcome in a scientific manner, nor explanations for their successes and failures.

Dr. Airola gives wonderful information, but does not tell you when to use the herbs.

He suggests getting herbal books, specifically, "How to Get Well" that gives a list of "specific medicinal herbs for practically every known disease or ailment. But, as has been said before there is no explanation to help you know who should use what, when to use it, how much and for how long.

This is the problem with all of the herbal texts.

Sure there is a list of conditions with the suggested herbs to use, but from our understanding the author has given no way to know which herbs will really help or do the job without possibly suppressing the condition or experiencing the mild or some times severe side effects we often hear about.

So, if you do not have the science of application found in the Science of Wellness, you are back at square one.

Oh yes, they give examples of cures, but no examples of their failures and what to do about them, nor do they mention those who died from undetermined cause, which are really related to the inappropriate use of the plant or product.

The only answer that can be given is, the person or practitioner did not use the herbs correctly and
overdosed. They know nothing about it being out of season.

Over the last 30 + years, Prevention Magazine has attempted to inform the public of the value of natural remedies and foods to improve their health.

They have advocated many diets designed to assist in reducing weight and a myriad of other suggestions to build healthy lifestyles. They have provided a great service and helped numerous people but have unknowingly caused some to be harmed.

Over many centuries, people fostered in ignorance and lack of understanding, what has been thought to be the best way to obtain health, not realizing or knowing that what gives health will also take it away and even cause death.
